The Spoken Ceremony

The spoken ceremony of a wedding is a central rite in the life of a couple.  It is a formal way of marking a beginning, a commitment, a change of relationships within a family and a new family within the human community.  It is a time for a festive gathering of family and friends as well as a very personal experience for the couple.

Why have a ceremony?

A ceremony is a special event that contains formal or ritualized components and which has as the purpose the setting apart and elevating of a particular person or event in our consciousness.  We have ceremonies to acknowledge personal achievement, to celebrate national victories and heroes, even to mark our sorrows and losses; but of all our traditional ceremonies, the wedding is the sweetest, because it is a celebration of love.  It celebrates possibilities; its attitude is joy; its mood hope.

Getting Hitched in La Jolla

by Elizabeth Hansen
June 30, 2009

Elizabeth Hansen is a long-time resident of La Jolla. She has written the Frommer Guide to San Diego and many feature articles about La Jolla.  Below is her recommendation of our church for your wedding.

"The Congregational Church of La Jolla is a good choice for those who want to marry in a place of worship. Unlike other denominations, the Congregational Church does not restrict weddings to their members. In fact, it is the most open and welcoming church in La Jolla. The church is located in the village and has a beautiful sanctuary that seats 150. Receptions can be held in the social hall or at one of several hotels located within walking distance."
